Featured in January 2017’s Rotarian Magazine, New York Times best selling author Andra Watkins chose a crazy way to launch her debut novel. She is one of the only living persons to walk the 444-mile Natchez Trace as the pioneers did. She had a life-changing adventure with her 80-year-old father. Her NYT best selling memoir Not Without My Father chronicles that experience. She also wrote the novel To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis, the novel Hard to Die, the novel I Am Number 13, and the photography collection Natchez Trace: Tracks in Time, published by Word Hermit Press. Andra is a Past President of the East Cooper Breakfast Rotary Club in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is past District Communications Chair for District 7770-Eastern South Carolina, founder of the District 7770 Friendship Exchange program, a two-time Rotarian of the Year, a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, and recipient of her District’s Distinguished Service Award. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of the Southeast and Caribbean. Tonight will also feature a social time with Antigua appetizers, the induction of two new Rotarians, and the opportunity to meet Andra before and after her presentation. For more information about Andra, you can visit her website at andrawatkins.com |

This meeting will be reviewing potential District Grant submissions (rough idea of what's needed. May not have all 'nailed' down but would have by May 27) 1. Is there a completed needs assessment? 2. What will the project be? 3. Who from our Club is and will be involved? 4. What resources are needed? 5. Anticipated impact and how will you know? We will hear from those wishing to submit a project for consideration. |

Learn more about Charlie the BEEvangilist at this story. A Milwaukee-native, Charlie “Charbee” Koenen is a serial entrepreneur, consummate teacher, and the Executive Director of BeeVangelists, a non-profit organization bringing a bee-centric vision regarding the plight of bees and the need to restore thriving hive communities in urban environments and beyond. Upon receiving a BFA in Graphic Design and studying Industrial Design at UW-Milwaukee in 1984, he jumped on the Apple Macintosh computer and began teaching people to “Think Different” about computers and desktop desktop digital technology. After helping start up several digital art departments in print, textile and media companies, he founded Third Millennium Design, an Apple Smart Studio that provided IT, training, equipment support and creative services for ad agencies, design departments and large scale brands throughout the Midwest and employed as many as 25 artists, technicians, teachers and sales consultants. In 2004 he walked away from the digital world to teach people to “Think Different” about bees. After six years of experimentation, Charlie turned conventional beekeeping on its side (literally) inventing the first Vented Top Bar Hive System, an alternative to the stacked box hive suited for urban beekeeping, and founded the company Beepods. Meanwhile bees started to make headlines by disappearing. Since founding BeeVangelists in 2016, Charlie has served to educate the public about beekeeping and advocate for bees establishing Community Supported Pollinators (CSPs) programs and working with private, public, and private institutions to install and care for urban apiaries. Bringing communities together, these apiaries can now be found in school campuses, church rooftops, retirement homes, golf courses, ecology centers, and numerous backyards throughout the Milwaukee area. |
