More about Open Door

Plug in and power up for community change with On the Table MKE

Greater Milwaukee Foundation initiative returns Oct. 9 to transform talk into action

Milwaukee, Wis., July 30, 2018 – Acting on the community’s growing hunger for collaboration, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation is reprising On the Table MKE, an epic day of conversation and cooperation open to anyone interested in helping our region reach its potential.

On the Table MKE 2018 will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Registration, which is free for any individual or organization willing to host or join a mealtime discussion with peers, is now open at onthetableMKE.org.

TURNING THE TABLES ON CHALLENGING ISSUES

The Foundation introduced On the Table MKE in 2017 as a new way to build relationships, generate ideas through respectful dialogue and put those ideas in motion for the benefit of the community. Although it takes place on a single day, On the Table MKE is much more than a single event. It involves hundreds of independently organized gatherings held across southeastern Wisconsin where people share a meal, talk about topics that matter and take action together.

“From spirited ideas to collaborations whose impact continued long after the day was done, On the Table MKE really brought out the best in our community,” said Foundation President and CEO Ellen Gilligan. “When we saw the concept catch on, we knew we had to bring the opportunity back so the momentum could grow. Whether you step forward to host or accept an invitation to join a table, you are helping bring our community closer together.”

Hosts set the terms of their gatherings, choosing whom to invite - typically 6-10 people – where to meet, time of day, topic of discussion and nature of the meal so it works best for all involved. From a morning coffee, to a backyard barbeque, to a dinner party – the options are endless.

NEW THIS YEAR

Community feedback led to some new and expanded offerings this year. For example:

  • Opportunities for deeper focus on matters of race, which arose at 81 percent of tables last year. A new facilitation kit will include discussion guides specific to racial equity as well as education, another frequent topic.
  • Access to a training session on facilitating challenging conversations.
  • Ideas to Action Grants, a small grants program that will be open to On the Table MKE participants to help launch creative ideas.
  • Emphasis on youth participation and high school engagement.

The Foundation further provides the registration platform, instructional materials and ongoing guidance to make each experience as successful as possible. In addition to sharing knowledge and outcomes that surface through participants’ effort, the Foundation learns from community ideas to help inform philanthropy.

In its first year, On the Table MKE engaged more than 5,400 people across 73 ZIP codes in meaningful conversation to ignite action. At least 150 different topics were explored. The Foundation’s Voices from the Community report examines the experience of participants.

SUCCESS STORIES

In the months that followed, many groups continued to meet, mobilize and implement their ideas for strengthening greater Milwaukee. Examples include:

  • St. Ann Center is partnering with visionary, local entrepreneurs to build businesses and anchor neighborhoods in 53206.
  • Next Door is using its early childhood research and expertise to inform business and nonprofit leaders in the region.
  • Milwaukee Bucks and America Scores Milwaukee are sharing a trauma-informed coaching model with Milwaukee’s youth coaches.
  • Calvary Presbyterian Church combines focused friendship and nonprofit networking to reduce homelessness in downtown Milwaukee.

Tuesday, March 27 -  Angela Dickison - State of WI Broadband Director - Public Service Commission

This was a VERY interesting presentation and we highly recommend it for any other Rotary club.  Angie Dickison, State Broadband Director presented on "Expanding Broadband in Wisconsin". Not only did she share opportunities for competitive grants to expand Broadband into areas that do not have at least two providers with broadband accessible at 25 mbps but she also gave us insight into where the future is going. It was an exceptional program and the 12 Rotarians in attendance really appreciated her driving over from Madison. We learned that ours is the first Rotary Club that has made a request for a presentation. Amigos club members would highly recommend her program for any Rotary Club. We officially adjourned at 7 and several members left for other responsibilities, we still had 10 remain for another half hour and the Q&A portion of the program, those she graciously allowed us to ask questions throughout the program. Amigos Rock! And so much fun which even our speaker commented on. If you would like a PDF of her PowerPoint presentation please leave a comment below and we'll connect to you through Facebook Messenger to get you the PowerPoint.

Angie Dickison joined the State of Wisconsin in 2015 to head up the State Broadband Office, which is housed within the Public Service Commission. During her time in Minnesota, Angie served as a member of the Blandin Foundation’s Broadband Strategy Board; and was appointed by Governor Dayton to represent rural Minnesota communities on the Governor’s Broadband Task Force.

John Nyakoe Nyasani - John was born and raised in Eldoret Kenya, East Africa. At 13 he knew he wanted to come to the United States and study. He vividly remembers being a child in his village and the community set up a screen and showed a movie....the first time anyone in their village saw a movie.  One scene had a locomotive come straight at the audience and he recalls everyone moving out of the way.  It was his introduction to technology that has remained through today. His father is a retired Agriculturalist and is a farmer. His mother owns a boutique and sells clothes.  They were strong examples of curiosity, work ethic, and determination for John. They also own a tea farm in Kenya. John emigrated to Minneapolis, MN at 17 years of age. He is married to Cassandra (from Milwaukee and why we are fortunate to have him in our  community.  He is the father of Jordan and Candyce and has lived in Milwaukee since 2010.  Currently he is the IS Business Automation Specialist / Health Reports Coordinator with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.  John is very engaging and passionate about life and his faith.

Gustavo de Arriba - Gustavo is originally from Spain and has been the Director of Global Quality for Johnson Controls since April 2017 but came to Milwaukee with Johnson Controls in May 2016.  He has worked for Johnson Controls for 18 years and came to Milwaukee after working in Germany since 2009.  He loves being challenged and getting outside of his comfort zone. He changed his professional field of work for the challenge.  He is learning Mandarin after being proficient in Spanish, English, and German and has basic French and Italian as well.  He is an Industrial Engineer with his MBA. He's been married since 2000 and the couple have 5 children. Gustavo loves rugby, has run 4 marathons and hopes to begin training to do his first US marathon in Chicago.
